C-level decision makers only start noticing the foundation when serious failures become a problem, meanwhile ignoring the minor failures and inefficiencies of building apps without best practices applied. Organizations have often times taken a maniacal prioritization to agile development (scrum), project management (black belt), and compliance (SOC, ISO), but not DevOps. In my last company, if deployment or upgrades struggled, business leaders who had doubts about the project now had reasons to say no.  Generally we found that technical resources on the client side became exhausted when the failure to deploy became an issue. The root cause was sandboxes that were out of sync, changes that weren’t tested against the same environment and teams exhausted from making the same mistake without realizing that fixing the foundation would set them on the right path.

The emotional toll, lost hours and demotivating impact of a team unwilling to deploy out of fear of another all nighter ending in a browbeating should encourage leaders to pause to think about the foundation. Finding the path to DevOps Nirvana starts by recognizing that anyone can be successful with a decent plan and an adherence to sticking to best practices.
